Midfielder Claims Interest – Could £20m Move Happen This Summer?
A £20m-rated Italian midfielder has claimed that Arsenal, Liverpool and Man Utd have all shown an interest in him. Could he move to England this summer?
The January transfer window may have slammed shut but clubs will still be working hard behind the scenes at identifying targets for the summer, so we’ll bring you all the latest news, gossip and rumours. Today, could Caludio Marchisio be heading to England?
Juventus midfielder Claudio Marchisio has claimed that agents have been in touch to express interest from Premier League giants Arsenal, Liverpool and Manchester United, according to the Express.
The 28-year-old has been in excellent form for Juve in recent seasons and has played a key role in the club winning back-to-back Serie A titles, while they are well on course to making it a treble of wins this season.
His impressive form has led to speculation of a big-money move to England and the player has now revealed that he has received phonecalls from agents claiming that Arsenal, Liverpool and Manchester United are keen on luring him to the Premiership.
However, Marchisio insists he has never heard from any of the clubs directly and if he did, he’d inform them to discuss any potential move with Juventus. He said:
“Sometimes I have received phone calls from agents who told me of the interest of clubs such as Arsenal, Manchester United and Liverpool.
“But no one from these clubs, however, has never contacted directly us. And in case I would tell them to talk to Juve.” Marchisio is quoted as saying by the Express.
So could Marchisio be heading to England this summer? Well he hasn’t exactly ruled out the possibility and committed his long-term future to Juventus with these comments. If he wasn’t interested in pursuing a possible move you’d expect him to say how happy he was at Juve and how he was only thinking about carrying on next season in Turin, or something along those lines. Instead, he simply said he’d tell any interested party to deal with the club if they tried to contact him directly.
While it may prove difficult to lure him away as the defensive midfielder is a boyhood Juve fan and has been with the club his entire career since joining them as a child, he is now 28 so there’s the possibility that he might be looking for a new league, in which case the Premier League could prove to be an attractive proposition.
Marchisio is also approaching the final two years of his current contract and talks over an extension are expected soon, so this is going to be a pivotal decision for the player. Does he commit the rest of his peak playing days to Juve? Or does he refuse to sign an extension and push for a move either now or in 12 months time?
I’d love to see him try his luck in England as he has the type of playing style that would suit Premiership football, and he’d make for an excellent addition at any of Arsenal, Liverpool or United. The Express claim Juve value him at around £20m, which would be a reasonable price for a player of his quality, but we’ll have to keep an eye on his contract negotiations over the next few weeks and see what he decides to do.
