Manchester United will be in the capital this weekend to take on West Ham at Upton Park looking to keep alive their slim hopes of finishing in the top four.

Ahead of the game, David Moyes has been speaking to the media at his pre-match press conference on Friday and gave a team news and injury update including the latest on the fitness of Robin van Persie.

After scoring a hat-trick, the striker was stretchered off in the final minute of Wednesday’s 3-0 win over Olympiakos in the Champions League after taking a kick to the back of his knee.

Moyes said immediately after the game that he thought the injury was ‘not serious’, but it’s enough to see him ruled out of tomorrow’s game and after initial scans proved inconclusive, the Dutchman is set to undergo further assessment on Friday afternoon to determine the full extent of the problem.

Moyes told the clubs official website:

“We’re getting Robin re-scanned again today,”

“We’re not quite conclusive on everything we’ve seen yet so we want to just check that out and be sure. He won’t be available for tomorrow’s game, but we’ll try to give you some update when we can on the outcome of it.”

Obviously it’s a big blow for United to lose their main striker and van Persie will join Chris Smalling and Jonny Evans in missing the trip to face the Hammers with the pair still nursing the injuries that have kept them out in recent weeks.

United go into the game knowing they can’t afford any more slip ups following last Sunday’s disappointing 3-0 loss to Liverpool, which has left them sitting seventh in the Premier League table and a full 12 points of fourth-placed Manchester City – who have two games in hand – so only a flawless last nine games will give the defending champions any hope of finishing in the top four this season.
