Matthaus Adamant Swiss Striker Will Join Arsenal In £8m Deal

German legend Lothar Matthaus is adamant Nuernberg striker Josip Drmic will join Arsenal at the end of the season despite the player playing down the rumours

As we approach the business end of the season clubs are starting to make plans for the summer transfer market so we’ll bring you all the latest news and gossip. Today, Gooner Mac brings us news on Arsenal’s interest in Josip Drmic.

German legend Lothar Matthaus is adamant Nuernberg striker Josip Drmic will join Arsenal at the end of the season despite the player playing down the rumours, according to ESPN.

Drmic has been a surprise package in the Bundesliga this season and moved level wit Borussia Dortmund’s Robert Lewandowski in the goal-scoring charts when he scored his 16th goal of the season at the weekend.

It seems the 21-year-old’s form has caught the eye of Arsene Wenger with German legend Lothar Matthaus claiming on Saturday night while working as a TV pundit on Sky Germany that the striker is all set to join Arsenal with his ‘wife’ already believed to be house-hunting in the capital.

“Drmic is linked to Arsenal. I know that his wife is already looking for a flat in London,”

“I’d like to think that he will successfully finish the season at Nuernberg and then will be sold at a profit. Address: Arsenal, London.” Matthaus is quoted as saying by ESPN.

Drmic was quizzed on this speculation after scoring during Nuernberg’s 3-2 loss to SC Freiburg and although the striker insists he is not married and no-one is looking for a flat in London, he did admit it was his dream to play for the Gunners.

“I am single right now. And there is no-one looking for a flat in London,”

“What the future will bring, I don’t know. Every lad dreams of joining Arsenal,” Drmic is quoted as saying by ESPN.

However, Matthaus responded on Monday by insisting that is sources were correct and claimed once again that the Switzerland international will join Arsenal this summer in an £8m deal, with the former Germany captain adamant he knows of a women looking for a flat on the strikers behalf and believes he will be proved right once again having previously predicted the transfers of Robert Lewandowski and Adrian Ramos.

He told German publication to Bild.

“Drmic will join Arsenal for eight million pounds,” he told Bild.

“It’s a fact that there is a woman, and I know her name, looking for a flat. I was right with [Robert] Lewandowski and [Adrian] Ramos [whose transfers he predicted on Sky Deutschland]. And I will be proved right again.”

Matthaus certainly seems sure the information he has is accurate, so it will be interesting to see how this one plays out. Drmic was always going to deny any possible deal, as he’s still got to play for Nuernberg until the end of the season and it probably wouldn’t go down too well with the fans if he announced he was leaving while they were in the midst of a relegation dog fight.

Nuernberg are currently sitting just above the drop zone and will almost certainly have to sell Drmic if they are relegated, but even if they manage to stay up it may prove difficult for them to keep hold of their star striker.

A new front-man is expected to be a priority for Arsenal this summer but it remains to be seen how the signing of Drmic would go down in North London. He’s a talented youngster but is hardly the big-money signing many fans are hoping to see.

With Nicklas Bendtner leaving when his contract expires at the end of the season, we are probably going to need to bring in two strikers, so perhaps Arsene will sign Drmic as well as a more established name to push Olivier Giroud for a first team spot next season.
