Chelsea suffered a crushing 3-1 defeat in the first leg of their Champions League quarter-final with Paris Saint Germain on Wednesday night.

Ezequiel Lavezzi fired PSG into the lead in an explosive couple of minutes at the Parc de Princes, with a stunning first time finish. Ramires was fouled by Thiago Silva on 27 minutes which allowed Eden Hazard to equalise with a cool penalty-kick, as the teams went in level at half-time.

It was a fairly even affair in the second 45 minutes but a calamitous David Luiz own-goal gave PSG the lead after an hour and Javier Pastore put PSG in the driving seat of the tie with a stunning solo goal in the final minute of the game.

Chelsea do have an away goal to take back to Stamford Bridge but PSG will be favourites with a two-goal advantage heading into the second-leg next Tuesday.

Player Ratings

Cech- 6- had a good game and was unfortunate to concede in the circumstances for the own-goal. A crowd of bodies prevented the Czech from seeing the ball before it was too late. Should have done better at his near post to prevent Pastore scoring the third.

Azpilicueta- 7- defended well and his distribution from the back was very good.

Terry- 6- struggled with the mercurial presence of Zlatan Ibrahimovich (who was forced off with what looked like a hamstring injury). Will be disappointed his side conceded three goals, especially the second goal.

Cahill- 7- just edged his centre-defence partner. He sought to attack the ball more often and was more comfortable bringing the ball out of the back. Man of the Match.

Ivanovic- 6- had a decent game and always tried to support his team in attack.

Luiz- 5- played okay on the whole, but individual moments defined his performance in the end. Gave away the foul which allowed PSG to get the ball into the box, from which Luiz completed a miserable night by turning into his own net.

Ramires- 6- full of energy and was in the right place at the right time to win the penalty in the first half.

Hazard- 7- Chelsea’s biggest threat on the night. Slotted home with composure to level the score but never had any clear cut chances to double his tally.

Oscar- 5- a poor night for the Brazilian, on an occasion you would expect him to rise to. Subbed for Lampard in the second half.

Willian- 7- the wide man worked very hard for the team, often found at right back helping Ivanovich double up on Lavezzi. Was lively in the right areas but couldn’t quite come up with enough chances.

Schurrle- 5- considering the German was played out of position, he didn’t do too badly. Seemed unsure of his role in the first half and could be found popping up on either wing, meaning their was no focal point to Chelsea’s attacks.

Subs

Torres- 5 – replaced Schurrle in the 65th minute but failed to make an impact.

Lampard- 5 – came on for Oscar after 72 minutes, with Ramires pushing forward. Struggled to find his feet and was out of sorts in the final minute when Pastore danced to easily past him to score.

How would you sum up Chelsea on the night?…Do you think they deserved to get beat?…Who were Chelsea’s better players?…Luiz gave away a clumsy foul and then put the ball in his own net- do you think he is a liability in such big games?…Are you confident the Blues can turn it round in the second leg?…please leave you comments below…
