Liverpool take on Norwich City at Carrow Road on Sunday looking to cement their place at the top of the Premier League table.

Ahead of the game, boss Brendan Rodgers has been speaking at his weekly press conference today and gave Liverpoolfc.com an update on the fitness of striker Daniel Sturridge.

The 24-year-old was forced off midway through the second half during Liverpool’s 3-2 win over Manchester City at Anfield last Sunday after feeling tightness on his hamstring.

Tests at Meldwood earlier this week showed a small hamstring strain and the player has been undergoing treatment to try and get him fit to face Norwich on Sunday.

However, while Rodgers confirmed the injury isn’t serious and he’ll give Sturridge every chance to prove his fitness, he feels the striker may be just short of being fit to make the trip to East Anglia this weekend.

He told the clubs website:

“He may struggle for the weekend.

“It’s not too serious and won’t keep him out for too many weeks, but he may be out for the weekend.

“We’ll assess it more over the next couple of days, but that’s how we’re looking at it at the moment.”

“He may well make a real good recovery over the next few days and be ready for the weekend.

“At this moment in time we’re just assessing him and seeing how he goes because he does recover very quickly. Before the first game of the season, he’d only played 45 minutes of football before he played and scored the winner [against Stoke].

“It’s certainly not as serious as what sometimes a hamstring injury can be.”

Losing Sturridge will come as a big blow to Liverpool as he’s been in stunning form this season and has forged an excellent partnership with Luis Suarez up front.

The England international has scored 24 goals to help the Reds climb to the top of the table and they go into the weekend holding a two-point lead over Chelsea knowing that if they win all of their remaining four games, they will be crowned champions.
