Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers is planning moves for Adam Lallana and Marcos Rojo as he eyes five new signings after being handed £60m to spend this summer.
As we approach the opening of the summer window clubs will be intensifying their efforts in the transfer market so we’ll bring you all the latest news and gossip. Today, news on Brendan Rodgers’ summer transfer plans.
Brendan Rodgers is planning moves for Adam Lallana and Marcos Rojo as he eyes five new signings after being handed £60m to spend this summer, according to reports today.
The Merseysiders Premier League title hopes were rocked after they dropped to second in the table following Manchester City’s 3-2 win over Everton on Saturday night.
However, Champions League football is already guaranteed for next season and it seems boss Brendan Rodgers is already making plans for the summer to build a squad capable of coping with the extra demand being in Europe will bring.
It sounds like it could be a busy summer and Rodgers is confident he’ll be able to attract the top quality players to Anfield now they are able to offer Champions League football again. He said:
‘We had the experience last summer when players respected what we were developing at the club but wanted to play at the top level [the Champions League],’
‘I suspect this summer will be a totally different proposition.
‘Our style of football is recognised. We have a way of working and a way of playing that in particular top players want to play in, a creative attacking team that wins. Hopefully it prepares us for bringing in this calibre of player and sets us up to have a real crack at the competition.’
‘It’s absolutely right to say that the squad isn’t big enough. It needs to be improved. The owners recognise that as well. They have been great.
‘They have a strategic way of looking at it and my job is to manage that,’ said Rodgers. ‘They have entrusted me to put my football vision in place.’ Rodgers is quoted as saying by the Daily Mail
The Daily Mail claim the Northern Irishman is looking to bring in at least five new signings after being handed £60m to spend by the club owners, and his key targets include Southampton duo Adam Lallana and Luke Shaw, as well as Yevhen Konoplyanka, Marcos Rojo and Steven Caulker.
Both Lallana and Shaw have enjoyed superb seasons at St Mary’s and the South Coast club are bracing themselves for interest in their star men, with Liverpool seemingly heading the queue for the pair. It’s going to take big money to persuade the Saints to sell and much of Liverpool’s £60m budget would be eaten up if they managed to strike a deal for the England international’s.
The Reds came close to signing Ukrainian winger Konoplyanka in January and it appears Rodgers will make another attempt to sign the Dnipro ace at the end of the season as he looks to strengthen his attacking options.
Steven Caulker would be an interesting signing and the fact that the Mail suggest Rodgers is looking at bringing in another centre-back must call into question the future of Daniel Agger, as the Dane is unlikely to want to stick around if he falls even further down the pecking order.
A new left-back is almost certainly going to be high on the agenda this summer and as well as Shaw, it seems Rodgers has his eye on Argentina international Marcos Rojo. The 24-year-old currently plays for Sporting Lisbon and is expected to be on the plane to Brazil with the Argentinean squad after a hugely impressive campaign.
