Arsenal will send scouts to watch Southampton’s final match of the season as Arsene Wenger lines-up a £15m bid for midfielder Morgan Schneiderlin, according to reports today.

Schneiderlin has continued his excellent form at the heart of the Saints midfield this season having progressed with the team since joining from French outfit Strasbourg way back in 2008.

His impressive displays have not only helped Mauricio Pochettino’s men secure a top eight finish this year, but they have also attracted interest from the upper echelons of the Premier League with Arsenal among the clubs understood to be keen.

The Daily Mail claim that Arsene Wenger has been monitoring Schneiderlin in recent months and will once again send his scouts to watch the midfielder during Southampton’s final game of the season against Manchester United at St Mary’s on Sunday.

The newspaper suggests that the Gunners boss has made the 24-year-old one of his key summer transfer targets after identifying a defensive midfielder as a priority and is drawing up a detailed dossier on the Frenchman ahead of a potential £15m move at the end of the season.

With Mikel Arteta’s lack of pace being exposed in the big games this season, I think it’s clear we need to replace the 32-year-old this summer and Schneiderlin would be an excellent addition to the squad. The French international has some of the best stats for interceptions and tackles in the Premier League over the past 24 months and would be the athletic ball-winner we desperately need in the middle of the park.

He also has the added bonus of having huge experience in English football, which is something many of our other reported targets don’t have, so he shouldn’t need any adaptation time to get used to the division.

Whether Southampton would be willing to cash in for £15m remains to be seen as the South Coast club are expected to fight off bids for several first team players this summer, with the likes of Luke Shaw, Adam Lallana and Dejan Lovren all understood to be attracting interest from the English big-boys.
