Manchester United will look to finish off a disappointing season on a positive note when they take on Southampton on Sunday afternoon.

Ahead of the game, interim boss Ryan Giggs has been speaking to the media and gave ManUtd.com a team news update, where he’s revealed a double injury boost concerning Wayne Rooney and Phil Jones.

Rooney has missed the last couple of weeks with a groin injury but Giggs has confirmed the striker returned to training this week, and although this weekend’s trip to St Marys is likely to come too soon for the player, the Welshman is confident he will have no problems being fit for the World Cup next month.

Jones was forced off during United’s 3-1 win over Hull City in midweek after falling on his shoulder and initial fears were the defender could be sidelined for some time. However, Giggs was pleased to reveal that the injury isn’t as bad as first thought and although he’ll miss the Southampton clash, he should be available to be named in Roy Hodgon’s World Cup squad, which he names on Monday.

Giggs told the clubs official website:

“Phil’s injury isn’t as bad as I thought on the night. He is obviously out for Sunday but should be okay for the World Cup.”

“Wayne has just started training over the last couple of days, and Sunday is probably a little bit too quick for him, but he is training and will also be fine for the World Cup.”

United head into the final game of the season needing Tottenham Hotspur to slip up at home to Aston Villa to have any chance of sneaking sixth spot and securing Europa League football next season.

Giggs is expected to once again rotate his squad as he looks to give players a chance to impress in what will be his final game in charge of United as interim manager.
