Chelsea look set to finally land Diego Costa after agreeing a €40m deal with Atletico Madrid to sign the Spanish international striker at the end of the season

Diego-Costa-Atletico Madrid

Chelsea look set to finally land Diego Costa after agreeing a €40m deal with Atletico Madrid for the Spanish international striker, but they’ll have to wait until June before officially announcing the transfer, according to reports.

After months of speculation, newspaper reports on Monday suggested that Chelsea had stepped up their interest in Costa by tabling a €40m (£32m) bid that would be enough to trigger the players buy-out clause.

It seems that bid has been successful, with Sky Sports claiming that the Blues have now come to an agreement with Ateltico Madrid to sign the hitman this summer and Costa is expected to sign a long-term contract worth in the region of £150,000-a-week , although the transfer won’t be officially announced until early June.

Atletico are facing a defining two weeks with the club on the verge of winning the La Liga title and need just a draw at the Nou Camp on Sunday to lift the trophy, while they will look to claim a historic double when they face city rivals Real Madrid in the final of the Champions League next weekend.

With two vital games on the horizon, it’s understandable that any transfer talk will be delayed until the end of the season, but it looks as though Costa is on his way to west London and Jose Mourinho will finally have the world class striker he’s been crying out for.

The Portuguese coach has made no secret of his desire to bring in a top class frontman this summer after lamenting his ‘lack of strikers’ on several occasions this season – despite the fact he has Fernando Torres, Samuel Eto’o and Demba Ba on the books at Stamford Bridge.

Chelsea ended the season in third and while they boasted easily the best defensive record in the Premier League, their lack of cutting edge up front was cited as the reason they failed to win any silverware this season with the club scoring over 30 goals less than main rivals Man City and Liverpool.

That issue appears to have been eradicated with the signing of Costa, with the Spanish international scoring an impressive 35 goals this season, and he’ll spearhead a devastating-looking attack next season, in front of the likes of Eden Hazard, Oscar and Willian.

Could Costa be the missing piece in Mourinho’s jigsaw? Chelsea fans will certainly be hoping so….
