Liverpool are now leading the chase ahead of Manchester United to sign £37m-rated Sporting Lisbon midfielder William Carvalho, according to reports today.

United have been strongly linked with the 22-year-old this season with scouts understood to have watched the powerful midfielder on numerous occasions, and there were even reports suggesting the players representatives met with officials from Old Trafford back in January.

However, so far the deposed champions have yet to make a formal move and it seems their reluctance to press ahead with any deal until they appoint a permanent successor to David Moyes could cost them.

The Daily Star cite reports coming out of Portugal that claim Liverpool are now in ‘pole position’ to sign Carvalho with Brendan Rodgers understood to be a huge admirer of the Portuguese international’s.

The Reds boss is expected to be active in the transfer market this summer as he looks to build a squad capable of competing in the Champions League next term following their impressive second-place finish this season.

With the Merseysiders leaky defence – which shipped 50 goals – costing them the Premier League title, a defensive midfielder is likely to be on the agenda and Carvalho would certainly fit the bill, as he’s considered as one of the most highly-rated young midfielders in Europe.

The player has a buy-out clause of £37m and Sporting Lisbon are expected to hold out for as close to that figure as they can get, but it remains to be seen whether the likes of Liverpool or United would be willing to stretch that far.

Carvalho has been named in Portugal’s preliminary 30-man squad for the World Cup finals and a positive showing in Brazil this summer is only going to increase the competition in his signature even further, so Liverpool and United may want to try and get a deal tied up quickly if they want to land the impressive midfielder.
