As we approach the opening of the summer window clubs will be intensifying their efforts in the transfer market so we’ll bring you all the latest news and gossip. Today, the race hots up for Stefan de Vrij.

Liverpool have joined Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur in the race for highly-rated Dutch centre-back Stefan de Vrij, according to reports today.

de Vrij has emerged as one of the most sought after defenders in Holland after some superb performances for both club and country over the past two seasons. The 22-year-old has been with current club Feyenoord his entire professional career and came through the clubs youth system before breaking into the first team in 2009.

He’s since established himself as a vital member of the team and his impressive displays have also seen him break into the Dutch national team set-up, with the youngster named in Louis van Gaal’s 23-man squad for this summers World Cup finals.

It appears de Vrij is attracting strong interest from England with the Daily Star claiming that Liverpool have now joined Man Utd and Spurs in showing a keen interest in luring him to the Premier League this summer, with the trio all expected to strengthen their leaky deference’s over the coming months.

United will probably fancy their chances of landing the talented centre-back as van Gaal – who is expected to be formally announced as David Moyes permanent successor next week – knows the player well from his time with the national team. Nemanja Vidic and Rio Ferdinand will both leave the deposed champions when their contracts expire in a few weeks so at least one central defender will need to be de Vrij would be a useful addition.

Spurs situation is less clear as they are continuing to search for a replacement for Tim Sherwood so any new signings are likely to be put on the back-burner until a new man is brought in, but it’s understood managerial target Frank de Boer is a big fan of de Vrij and would be keen on taking him to North London if he’s appointed at White Hart Lane.

It appears the latest club to join the race is Liverpool and Brendan Rodgers is expected to strengthen his defence this summer after seeing their title charge slip away during the final few games. The Merseysiders were devastating in attack but their leaky defence – which shipped 50 goals – has been blamed for them missing out on their first league title in 24 years, so a new centre-half is on the agenda and de Vrij is seemingly on Rodgers radar.
