Manchester United are closing in on the signing of Chelsea target Luke Shaw after agreeing personal terms with the Southampton youngster, but the deal looks like it will end up costing in excess of £68m, according to reports today.

Shaw is expected to leave the Saints after another excellent season on the South Coast and his impressive form saw him edge out Chelsea’s Ashley Cole for a place in Roy Hodgson’s England squad for this summers World Cup finals in Brazil.

Both Manchester United and Chelsea have been strongly linked with a move for the 18-year-old in recent months but it appears the Red Devils are now the clear favourites for his signature with the Express claiming that they have lodged a £27m bid and agreed personal terms with the left-back.

The newspaper suggests United have offered a staggering £160,000-a-week over the course of a five-year deal, making the package worth over £41m, and it would make Shaw the highest paid defender in world football.

If true and Southampton accept their £27m offer, it means the entire deal would be worth in excess of £68m – which is a HUGE figure for such a young and inexperienced player – so it’s no wonder that Chelsea have refused to match what United are offering.

The report states that Shaw made clear his desire to leave at the end of last season but his proposed switch to Old Trafford will now have to be put on the back-burner as Southampton aren’t willing to let any more players leave until a replacement for Mauricio Pochettino is found.

Patrice Evra signed a new one-year contract last month so United aren’t in any immediate need of a new left-back, but with the Frenchman now 33 a long-term solution is required and Shaw could make the left-back role his own for the next 10 years.

The proposed fee of £27m sounds more than reasonable for a player of his quality and potential. However, wages of £160,000-a-week seem ridiculous for a teenager who has just two years experience in the Premier League. Shaw will be on nowhere near that figure at Southampton and I’m sure he would have accepted much less to move to Manchester United, so it looks like the deposed champions are paying through the nose to make sure they beat Chelsea to the players signature.

Koke to chelsea will be an asset than Thiago.Koke behind Costa and in-line with Hazard and Willian will be too much for any team to contain.Chelsea will have the backs made up of Cahill,Apsecelcuta,Ivanovich, and Terry then in their front you have Matic and Fab/Rami and on top of them Hazard,Koke and Willian and leading the top is Costa will win cups

Offering luke shaw 160,000 a week is absolutely crazy for a player of his age.LVG should reconsider this because there are reveral left backs everywhere who are willing to come to utd even if we are not in the champions league. LvG is too experienced to be deficient in getting the calibre of players he want

Once Van Gaal finishes the world cup commitments with the dutch and joins Manchester United offices then u will see players being bought and no more nonsense rumors. So wait till he comes back

Sounds like a good signing.. Could be worth it afterall.. But the agreed wage is so outrageous.. This isn’t Louis Van Gaal’s making, but Woodward’s.. 80K or 100 should be enough for the teen.

Gill was the best Chairman ever. Ed Deadwood is the real reason Man United did so badly last season, and if he is in charge of buying players this season, we will do even worse
