Manchester United have tabled a €25m bid for long-term target Nicolas Gaitan and hope to tie up a deal with Benfica in the coming days, according to reports today.

I’m sure many United fans will know the name Gaitan well as the club have been strongly linked with the winger for over 18 months, with former managers Sir Alex Ferguson and David Moyes both reportedly keen on taking him to Old Trafford.

It looks like the deposed champions could finally get their hands on the 26-year-old this summer with the Metro citing reports coming out of Portugal that claim the club have now made a formal €25m (£20m) bid and hope to conclude a deal with Benfica in the next few days.

Gaitan supposedly informed the Portuguese champions that he wanted to leave at the end of last season and club officials decided it was time to cash-in so they can use the money raised from his sale to strengthen other areas of the squad.

It looks as the Agentinean international’s availability has alerted United with the newspaper suggesting that the club are so keen to get a deal tied up quickly that they are prepared to pay the full €25m fee up front and may even be willing to throw out-of-favour winger Bebe into the deal.

New United boss Louis van Gaal is expected to be busy in the transfer market this summer as he looks to  rebuild a flagging squad that finished down in seventh place last season. While the defence is likely to be his priority, adding to his attacking options is also likely to be on the agenda and Gaitan would be a useful addition.

The player predominantely plays on the wing for Benfica but can also play through the middle as an attacking midfielder. He chipped in with 8 goals in 42 appearances last season, which is a reasonable return, but he is extremely creative and would be an exciting signing for the fans.

It’s an intriguing report and certainly believable when you consider United’s previous interest in the player, but we’ll have to see how much truth there is in it and whether United can secure a deal over the coming days.
