Arsenal, Chelsea and Manchester United have received a boost in their pursuit of Gonzalo Higuain with reports today claiming that Napoli have already lined-up his replacement.

Speculation in recent days has suggested that Barcelona are ready to table a £45m for the 26-year-old striker, with new boss Luis Enrique supposedly identifying him as a key target as he looks to overhaul the Catalans squad this summer.

Napoli were quick to dismiss suggestions Higuain would be sold but reports in Italy claim the Serie A outfit could be tempted to cash in at the right price and they have already lined-up a replacement in forward Eduardo Vargas – who is still on the books at Napoli after being sent out on loan to Valencia last season by Rafa Benitez.

Vargas was expected to be sold on a permanent basis this summer but his impressive displays for Chile at the World Cup appear to have persuaded Benitez to give him another chance at the Stadio San Paolo, which could pave the way for Higuain’s exit, and the Express claim that Arsenal, Chelsea and Manchester United have all been alerted to the Argentinean’s potential availability and are ready to battle Barcelona for his signature.

The Gunners were strongly linked with Higuain last summer but eventually missed out as he left Real Madrid for Italy, and he’s continued his excellent form in front of goal with 24 goals and 11 assists in his first season in Serie A. Arsene Wenger is on the look-out for another striker to offer competition to Olivier Giroud and Higuain would certainly add a potent threat to the north Londoners attack next season if they were able to lure him to the Emirates.

Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho is also keen to add to his strike-force but a move for Higuain is unlikely should they manage to get their proposed deal for Diego Costa over the line. However, if that move falls through, the Argentinean international would be an excellent alternative.

United’s supposed interest is interesting as a striker is perhaps the last thing Louis van Gaal should be worrying about. The Dutch coach already has Robin van Persie and Wayne Rooney on the books at Old Trafford so it’s difficult to see where Higuain would fit in unless one of the current duo were sold.

Obviously Higuain would be an superb signing for any club but it remains to be seen what Napoli’s asking price would be and the Premier League trio would also face stiff competition from Spanish giants Barcelona, so any potential deal isn’t going to be easy to pull off.
