Angel Di Maria Real Madrid

Arsenal and Manchester United have received a boost in their pursuit of Real Madrid attacker Angel Di Maria with the Argentinean casting doubt over his future at the Bernabeu, according to reports today.

Di Maria has been strongly linked with a move away from Madrid over the past 12 months with Arsenal and Manchester United among the clubs understood to be interested in luring him to the Premier League.

Gunners boss Arsene Wenger made enquiries to sign the attacker last summer before eventually landing Mesut Ozil but the Frenchman hasn’t given up hope of trying to bring the 26-year-old to north London as he tries to build a squad capable of sustaining a title challenge next year.

New United boss Louis van Gaal is expected to be busy in the transfer market this summer as he looks to rebuild the squad he inherited from David Moyes, and Di Maria is one of a number of top quality players the Dutchman is supposedly interested in.

Rports earlier this month suggested that Madrid were willing to cash in on the player if their £40m asking price was met and now in a further boost to the English duo, Di Maria himself has cast doubt over his future at Madrid.

When quizzed by reporters about interest in his services and a potential move this summer, the Argentinean international failed to commit his future to the European champions and hinted that he will consider his future after the World Cup.

“I’ve asked my agent not to tell me anything about the talks he’s having.

“I don’t know what’s going to happen with my career. I don’t want to know anything about my future right now.

“I’m focusing on my national team and not on what’s going on elsewhere,”

“My team-mates and I don’t read or listen to all the things being said in the media.

“We’re just thinking about ourselves and the unity of the group.” Di Maria is quoted as saying by the Express

Di Maria has just come off the back of another fine season in Spain where his 11 goals and 26 assists helped Madrid lift the Champions League as well as the Copa del Rey trophy.

However, that hasn’t stopped speculation surrounding his future at the Bernabeu as despite his impressive figures, he was inconsistent at times last season and drew criticism from his own supporters and local media, with some suggesting he was struggling to fit into the new look attack alongside Gareth Bale and Cristiano Ronaldo.

Whether this assessment is accurate or a little unfair is open for debate, but one things for sure and that’s Arsenal and United would jump at the chance to sign Di Maria if he does come on the market.

While it remains to be seen whether the duo would be willing to meet Madrid’s supposed £40m asking price, they would have pulled off a major coup if either of the clubs were able to sign the attacker this summer.
