Arsenal + Chelsea Dealt Blow As Khedira Prepares Statement Confirming Bernabeu Stay
Arsenal and Chelsea have been dealt a blow as Sami Khedira has performed a u-turn and will release a statement confirming he plans to stay at Real Madrid.
The summer transfer window is now open for business and it’s expected to be a busy few weeks as managers strengthen their squads ahead of next season, so we’ll bring you all the latest news and gossip. Today, Arsenal and Chelsea are dealt a blow in their pursuit of Sami Khedira.
Arsenal and Chelsea have been dealt a huge blow as Sami Khedira has performed a dramatic u-turn and will release a statement confirming he plans to stay at Real Madrid this summer, according to reports in Spain.
Khedira has just 12 months left to run on his current deal at Madrid and was placed on the transfer list earlier this summer after snubbing a contract extension offer from the Spanish giants, with many reports suggesting he wanted to leave the Bernabeu after becoming increasingly frustrated at the club.
This led to intense speculation linking him with a move to the capital in recent weeks with both Arsenal and Chelsea understood to be keen on luring the German international to the Premier League.
Reports last week suggested that the Gunners were discussing personal terms with the 27-year-old after supposedly agreeing a €29m deal with Madrid, while newspapers have also indicated that Blues boss Jose Mourinho made a personal call to Khedira to try and persuade him to make the move to Stamford Bridge.
However, the midfielders agent spoke out on Wednesday night insisting there had been no contact with either London club and now Spanish newspaper El Confidential are claiming today that Khedira has performed a dramatic u-turn and is set to release a statement confirming his desire to remain at the Bernabeu.
The outlet states that Khedira regrets not signing the extension that was offered to him back in October and has told his agent to go back to the European champions and make it clear he is now ready to commit his future to the club.
If true, this news will come as a huge blow to both Arsenal and Chelsea. Arsene Wenger is in the market for a long-term replacement for Mikel Arteta and Khedira was believed to be the Frenchman’s key target.
Likewise, Jose Mourinho needs another central midfielder after seeing Frank Lampard and David Luiz leave this summer and the Portuguese coach was seemingly keen to be reunited with Khedira having worked with him during his time at Madrid.
However, all may not be lost and there could yet be another twist in this saga as El Confidential hint that despite the player now wanting to stay at Madrid, it could be too late. Madrid bosses didn’t take kindly to him rejecting their contract extension offer and the Spanish giants have just confirmed the signing of Toni Kroos from Bayern Munich.
So Khedira could now find that Madrid’s contract offer is no longer on the table. The midfielder is currently enjoying a holiday after his World Cup exploits and is expected to hold talks with Madrid about his future when he returns next week, but he may be shocked to learn that he’s no longer wanted at the Barnabeu upon his return.
