Liverpool appear to be leading domestic rivals Arsenal, Chelsea, Manchester United and Tottenham in the race to sign €8m-rated Belgian starlet Zakaria Bakkali this summer, according to reports.

Bakkali is highly-rated in both his homeland and in Holland where he’s been impressing since breaking into the PSV Eindhoven first team last season after coming through the youth ranks at the club.

The 18-year-old scored 3 goals in his 16 Eredivisie appearances in 2013/14 and announced himself on the European stage after scoring on his debut in the Champions League against Zulte Waregem.

His potential has alerted several Premier League clubs with reports claiming that Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool, Manchester United and Tottenham have all been keeping a close eye on the youngsters progress in recent months.

However, the Daily Star suggest that Liverpool could now be leading the race for Bakkali’s signature as Brendan Rodgers looks to add some much-needed depth to his squad ahead of the Merseysiders return to the Champions League this coming season.

The newspaper states that the attacker is wanting showdown talks with officials at PSV to seek assurances over his future, and Liverpool could be ready to take advantage over the uncertainty by launching a bid to try and bring him to Anfield ahead of their rivals.

Bakkali signed a new contract at PSV back in January but it was only an 18 month deal which expires in 2015 so despite his immense potential, it’s understood PSV would be willing to cash in at around €8m as they’d only be due minimal training compensation if he was to run down the final year of his deal.

Although he qualified to play for Morocco, Bakkali opted to represent Belgium at international level and made his full debut earlier this year having played for their youth teams from the age of 15 through to Under-21.

It remains to be seen whether Liverpool, or any other English side for that matter, formailise their interest in the left-sided attacker this summer but he’s certainly an exciting prospect for the future and would be a good investment if someone could snap him up for just €8m.
