Spaniard Set For Liverpool Medical After Arsenal Move Falls Through

Javier Manquillo is set to undergo a medical with Liverpool after a two-year loan was agreed with Atletico Madrid with a proposed move to Arsenal collapsing.

The summer transfer window is now open for business and it’s expected to be a busy few weeks as managers strengthen their squads ahead of next season, so we’ll bring you all the latest news and gossip. Today, Liverpool close in on Javier Manquillo.

Javier Manquillo is set to undergo a medical with Liverpool after a two-year loan was agreed with Atletico Madrid with a proposed move to Arsenal collapsing last week, according to reports in Spain.

The 20-year-old was strongly linked with a move to the Gunners earlier this month and at one stage it appeared to be a ‘done deal’, but the move broke down due to the youngster having concerns about the amount of regular first team football he’d get at the Emirates.

Liverpool were quick to make their move and enter negotiations with Atletico, and Spanish outlet Marca claim that an agreement has now been reached that will see Manquillo move to Anfield on a two-year loan with the option to make the transfer permanent for just £4.7m.

The newspaper suggests that the agreement is expected to be announced today and the defender will then head off to America to undergo a medical before linking-up with the rest of the Liverpool squad.

It’s understood the Merseysiders will pay a small loan fee to Atletico and Brendan Rodgers will assess the player over the next two seasons before taking a decision over whether to make the deal a permanent one.

Manquillo is predominantly a right-back and will offer competition to Glen Johnson, but he’s also capable of filling in at left-back or even on the wing if needed, so he’ll give Rodgers plenty of options if and when this move goes through.

It’s expected to be a busy week at Liverpool with the club also closing in on deals for Loic Remy, Dejan Lovren and Divock Origi, and if the trio, along with Manquillo, complete their proposed moves to Anfield then it will take the clubs transfer dealings to eight following the additions of Lazar Markovic, Adam Lallana, Rickie Lambert and Emre Can.
