Arsenal Close In On Agreement For €46m-Rated Man Utd Target
Arsenal are closing in on an agreement to sign €46m-rated Sporting Lisbon midfielder William Carvalho, who has also been closely linked with Manchester United
The summer transfer window is now well under way and managers are working hard to strengthen their squads ahead of next season, so we’ll bring you all the latest news and gossip. Today, Arsenal are closing in on an agreement for Man Utd target William Carvalho.
Arsenal are closing in on an agreement to sign €46m-rated Sporting Lisbon midfielder William Carvalho, who has also been closely linked with Manchester United, according to reports today.
Carvalho has emerged as one of the most highly rated young midfielders in Europe after an excellent season with Sporting and his impressive displays at the heart of their midfield earned him a place in the Portugal squad for this summers World Cup finals in Brazil.
His form has also led to interest from the Premier League with Arsenal and Manchester United among the clubs who have been strongly linked with a move for the 22-year-old in recent months.
The Gunners were reported to have seen a £24m bid rejected for Carvalho last month but were then handed a timely boost last week when news emerged suggesting that Sporting chiefs had accepted they had to cash-in on the midfielder to help ease their financial woes.
The Portuguese international has a buy-out clause worth €46m (£37m) but it’s understood that Sporting are now willing to sell for a much lower figure as long as the payment is made up front and not in installments as they are desperate for an injection of cash to balance the books.
It now looks like Arsenal have stepped up their pursuit with the Metro claiming that a fresh offer has been tabled and it’s believed to be nearer to what Sporting are willing to sell for. It’s not known what the north Londoners new bid amounts to, but the newspaper suggests that with Arsenal the only team in serious negotiations, a deal is now close between the two clubs.
It remains to be seen how United will respond to the news and whether Louis van Gaal will launch a rival bid by making his interest official. The Dutchman is on the look-out for a midfielder to partner Ander Herrera in his new-look side and Carvalho would certainly be an exciting prospect.
However, for now it appears Arsenal are in the driving seat and a deal is getting closer to take the powerful youngster to the Emirates. Many Gunners fans have been calling out for a proper defensive midfielder to be signed by Arsene Wenger and they may just be about to get their wish.
