Spaniard Skips Training & Is En Route To Liverpool To Undergo Medical Ahead Of Move

Javier Manquillo was given permission by Atletico Madrid to skip training today and is en route to the UK to undergo a medical ahead of his move to Liverpool

The summer transfer window is now well under way and managers are working hard to strengthen their squads ahead of next season, so we’ll bring you all the latest news and gossip. Today, Javier Manquillo is on his way to Liverpool.

Javier Manquillo was given permission by Atletico Madrid to skip training today and is en route to the UK to undergo a medical ahead of his move to Liverpool, according to reports in Spain.

The 20-year-old was strongly linked with a move to Arsenal earlier in the summer and at one stage it appeared to be a ‘done deal’, but the move broke down due to the youngster having concerns about the amount of regular first team football he’d get at the Emirates.

Liverpool were quick to make their move and enter negotiations with Atletico, and reports in late July claimed that an agreement was reached between the two clubs that will see Manquillo move to Anfield on a two-year loan with the option to make the transfer permanent for just £4.7m.

It appears the move is now on the verge of completion as Spanish newspaper Marca are reporting that Manquillo wasn’t present at training today as he is travelling to Liverpool to undergo a medical and complete the formalities of his loan move.

Atletico have already signed Cristian Ansaldi as his replacement and once his move is finalised, Manquillo is expected to challenge Glen Johnson for the right-back slot next season.

The youngster has represented Spain at every youth level from Under-16 through to Under-20 and is tipped for a bright future, and he’s now got two years to break his way into Brendan Rodgers’ first team plans and convince the Reds boss he deserves a permanent switch to Anfield.

Once this deal is completed, Manquillo will become Liverpool’s seventh major summer signing following the arrivals of Emre Can, Adam Lallana, Rickie Lambert, Lazar Markovic, Dejan Lovren and Divock Origi, but Rodgers is still believed to be on the look-out for further new additions with a left-back and another striker understood to be on the agenda.
