Arsenal Lead Man Utd In Race For €25m Marco Reus

Arsenal are leading Manchester United in the chase for Borussia Dortmund attacker Marco Reus who is believed to have a €25m buy-out clause in his contract

The summer transfer window is now well under way and managers are working hard to strengthen their squads ahead of next season, so we’ll bring you all the latest news and gossip. Today, Arsenal lead Man Utd in the race for Marco Reus.

Arsenal are leading Manchester United in the chase for Borussia Dortmund attacker Marco Reus who is believed to have a €25m buy-out clause in his contract, according to reports in Germany.

Reus has emerged as one of the most highly-rated attackers in Europe after enjoying two excellent seasons at Dortmund, with the winger scoring 42 goals in 90 appearances since making the move from Borussia Mönchengladbach in 2012.

However, the 25-year-old’s future at the Westfalenstadion has been speculated about in recent weeks amid reports claiming he has turned down a contract extension offer from Dortmund.

Bayern Munich chief Karl Heinz-Rummenigge then faced a backlash from their great rivals after revealing that Reus has a buy-out clause – which comes into effect in the summer of 2015 – set at just €25m and not the €35m that many had believed.

These comments irked Dortmund bosses and they released a statement on their official website earlier this week questioning the former strikers motives:

“Borussia Dortmund has noted with some irritation that Karl-Heinz Rummenigge is currently discussing internal BVB matters in a three-day rhythm in the media,”

“We are sure that it is quite clear to anybody interested in football what intentions lie behind such remarks. Karl-Heinz Rummenigge is also fully aware that his behaviour is only going to further damage an already tense relationship between Borussia Dortmund and Bayern Munich.

“Naturally as employers, we are going to continue to follow our principles in future and not discuss any details of our employees’ contracts in public.”

There is a feeling that perhaps Rummenigge is trying to unsettle Reus ahead of making a formal move for his services next summer, much in the same way Bayern did before signing Mario Gotze and Robert Lewandowski from their great rivals.

However, German publication Die Welt suggests that should Reus decide to leave Dortmund, he is likely to head for the Premier League with Arsenal and Manchester United keen on luring him to England.

In fact, Die Welt claim that the Gunners are currently leading the chase and have the finances in place to offer Reus a substantial salary increase, and the newspaper suggests that Arsene Wenger is a huge fan of the German international’s and is desperate to take him to the Emirates.

This news will no doubt excite Gunners fans as Reus would be a sensational coup for the club if they were able to pull it off. There were reports last month suggesting the north Londoners had a deal in place to sign the attacker this summer before he picked up an injury just before the World Cup, so there certainly seems to be concrete interest from the club.

It’s going to be interesting to see how this plays out and if Reus fails to sign a new contract before next summer, you’d expect some of the biggest clubs in the world to be battling it out for his signature as €25m would be an absolute bargain for a player of his quality in today’s market.
