Arsenal are readying an improved offer for Chelsea target William Carvalho after having a €25million bid rejected by Sporting Lisbon, according to reports.
The summer transfer window is now reaching its climax and managers are working hard to make some last minute additions to their squad, so we’ll bring you all the latest news and gossip. Today, Arsenal make a bid for Chelsea target William Carvalho.
Arsenal are readying an improved offer for Chelsea target William Carvalho after having a €25m bid rejected by Sporting Lisbon, according to reports.
Carvalho is one of the most highly-rated young midfielder in Europe and his potential has alerted the likes of Arsenal and Chelsea this summer, with the London duo among the clubs to be strongly linked with the 22-year-old in recent weeks.
It appears Arsenal have now made the first move for his signature with Goal claiming the Gunners have had a €25m (£20m) offer rejected by Sporting Lisbon, with the Portuguese outfit understood to be holding out for a fee nearer €35m (£28m).
It’s unclear whether Arsene Wenger will be prepared to go that high but the report suggests the Frenchman will go back in with an improved bid as he looks to try and bring in the powerful midfielder before the end of the month.
While the price could prove to be a sticking point, Goal also state that Arsenal are reluctant to spend big until their status in the group stages of the Champions League is assured while any potential deal for Carvalho is also being complicated by the fact an investment firm- Banco Espirito Santo – own 40% of the midfielders economic rights.
All of the above suggest that Arsenal’s pursuit of Carvalho is likely to go right down to the wire and Gunners fans could be in for a tense deadline day waiting to see if their club can secure another big money signing.
Carvalho is predominantly a defensive midfielder but is also capable of filling in at centre-back – which are two positions Arsenal could do with strengthening – so he’d be an excellent addition for Emirates club.
However, it remains to be seen whether they’ll be able to strike a deal with Sporting while it’s also unclear whether Chelsea may enter the bidding and scupper their rivals hopes, so it’s going to be an interesting few days to see how this all pans out.
