Arsenal and Liverpool have both made approaches to Barcelona for out-of-favour midfielder Alex Song, according to reports today.

Song has been tipped to leave the Nou Camp this summer after failing to establish himself as an important part of the first team following his move from Arsenal in 2012, with the midfielder making just 19 appearances last season – with many of those coming from the substitutes bench.

Liverpool were strongly linked with the Cameroonian international earlier this month with some reports suggesting a deal was close to completion, but move failed to materialise and the speculation has since died down.

However, it looks like Brendan Rodgers has renewed his interest as the Metro are citing reports coming from El Mundo Deportivo that claim the Merseysiders are still firmly in the race for his signature and hope to tie up a loan deal before the end of the month.

It’s understood that Barcelona would prefer to sell for £10m now, but Liverpool remain hopeful of tying up a season-long loan deal with the option to make it permanent next summer if everything goes to plan.

The Spanish newspaper suggests that French giants Marseille and former club Arsenal have also made a shock approach for the 26-year-old, but it’s Liverpool who are believed to be the front-runner at present.

Arsene Wenger is on the look-out for a versatile defensive player who can play in midfield or at centre-back if required and Song would certainly fit the bill, but I’m not too sure how his return would go down in north London following exit acrimonious exit two years ago, when there were rumours of a rift between the midfielder and club coaches.

Song has been on the fringes of things at Barcelona and a move would certainly do him good to resurrect his career, and he’s always hinted at a return to the Premier League if he was to ever leave Barca, but I’d be surprised if he was to end up back at the Emirates so a switch to Liverpool is far more likely if he does come back to England.
