Arsenal are discussing personal terms with the agent of Bourssia Dortmund defender Sokratis Papastathopoulos after tabling a €14m bid for the Greek international, according to reports today.

Arsene Wenger has made no secret of his desire to strengthen his defensive options before the transfer window closes on Monday night with a replacement for Thomas Vermaelen still very much on the agenda.

Reports on Thursday claimed that we had made a €14m (£11m) bid for Bourssia Dortmund defender Sokratis Papastathopoulos and although the offer is believed to be below the German clubs asking price, it seems we must be confident of agreeing a deal as we’ve opened talks with the players representatives.

The Metro are citing reports coming out of Italy that claim Arsenal chiefs are now discussing personal terms with the 26-year-old’s agent, Antonio Apostopoulos, with all parties understood to be keen for a quick resolution.

Papastathopoulos is a versatile utility player who’s predominantly a centre-back but is also capable of playing at right-back or even in defensive midfield if required, so he’d certainly give Arsene Wenger plenty of option if he was to make the move to North London.

However, we are yet to agree a fee with Dortmund and negotiations could be complicated by the fact we’ve been drawn in the same Champions League group, as the Germans are unlikely to want to strengthen a direct European rival.

Several other names are being linked with a move to the Emirates and it looks like we could be in for a busy final three days of the transfer window. We’ll have to wait and see how it all plays out, but fingers crossed Arsene manages to get at least two deals done before the window slams shut on Monday night.
