By on September 16, 2014

Liverpool made hard work of beating Bulgarian minnows Ludogorets at Anfield with Steven Gerrard scoring a last minute penalty to secure a 2-1 win.

Despite long periods of possession, it took the Reds until the 82nd minute to open the scoring when summer signing Mario Balotelli did well to hold off two defenders before finding the far corner of the net with a superb finish.

The visitors shocked Anfield by levelling things up a 1-1 in the 90th minute when Abalo raced on to a through-ball before rounding Mignolet and slotting into the empty net.

However, with just seconds remaining, Ludogorets goalkeeper Borjan allowed the ball to run loose from a routine back-pass which resulted in the debutant hauling down Javier Manquillo in the box. Steven Gerrard stepped up to calmly slot home the resulting penalty to give Liverpool the three points.
