[Video Goals] Arsenal 1-2 Southampton: Sanchez Stunner Not Enough As Gunners Crash

By on September 23, 2014

Arsenal slumped to a disappointing 2-1 defeat to Southampton in the third round of the Capital One Cup on Tuesday night.

Arsene Wenger named an inexperienced back-four while Abou Diaby and Joel Campbell were handed rare starts, but it was one of our more established players that opened the scoring as Chilean forward Alexis Sanchez scored a stunning free-kick to make it 1-0 in the 15th minute.

However, Tomas Rosicky then gave away a needless penalty just minutes later to gift Southampton a way straight back in to the game, and Dusan Tadic made no mistake from the spot for 1-1 before Nathan Clyne let loose with a fearsome strike from fully 30 yards to put the visitors ahead at 2-1 just before the break.

That turned out to be the winner as we couldn’t find a way back in to the game and we crash out of the League Cup at the third round stage for the first time in 10 years.
