Manchester United held on to secure a vital 2-1 win over West Ham at Old Trafford this afternoon despite Wayne Rooney being sent off midway through the second half.

United raced into a two-goal lead as Rooney stroked home Rafael’s fifth minute cross for 1-0 before Robin van Persie found the bottom corner with a right-footed effort in the 22nd minute to double the hosts advantage.

However, West Ham grabbed a goal back just before half time when Sakho was on hand to head home a loose ball in the box before Rooney was given his marching orders after kicking out at Steward Downing off the ball.

The Hammers pressed for a late equaliser but the hosts held on to secure a vital win. Watch the goals and highlights here:
