Arsenal fans have taken to Twitter to voice their frustration at reports suggesting Mikel Arteta is set to sign a new one-year contract extension.

Supporters have been calling for Arsene Wenger to sign a new defensive midfielder for months now and many expected the boss to finally bring someone in during the summer.

However, despite being linked with the likes of Sami Khedira, Morgan Schneiderlin, Adrien Rabiot and William Carvalho, Wenger failed to sign a new central midfielder before the transfer window slammed shut on September 1st.

This has left Arteta as our first choice holding midfielder and the Spaniard has attracted criticism for his sluggish start to the new campaign. The 32-year-old was never blessed with great pace, but time is catching up with him as his lack of speed is being exposed time and again – especially against top opposition – while he’s also picked up two untimely injuries already this season.

Many feel Arteta’s legs have gone and he’s simply not up to the challenge of playing the holding role for a top European side like Arsenal, and with his contract up in June, fans were hoping that this would be the perfect time to say goodbye and bring in a new, young and athletic midfielder to the club.

So it’s come as a huge surprise to read reports in the newspapers today claiming that the midfielder is set to sign a new one-year extension, tying him to the club until 2016, and many Arsenal fans have taken to Twitter to voice their frustration at the news:

Wenger is hellbent in making Arsenal mediocre.

Instead of strengthening this team he is doing the complete opposite.

All the while, the gap between arsenal and the elite teams widens further.

I seriously think Wenger has lost some of his marbles.
