Arsenal Blow As Chelsea ‘Make Offer’ For €20m-Rated Target Ahead Of January Move
Chelsea appear to have moved ahead of Arsenal in the race to land Sami Khedira after making a formal offer to Real Madrid for the €20m German midfielder.
The summer transfer window may be closed but managers are already thinking ahead to future transfer windows so we’ll bring you all the latest news and gossip. Today, Arsenal and Chelsea are linked with Real Madrid’s Sami Khedira.
Chelsea appear to have moved ahead of Arsenal in the race to land Sami Khedira after making a formal offer to Real Madrid for the German midfielder, according to reports.
Khedira’s future at the Bernabeu has been subject to intense speculation recently after he turned down a contract extension offer back in June, with the midfielder now in the final year of his deal.
The likes of Arsenal and Chelsea were strongly linked with him during the summer transfer window but neither club was prepared to meet the midfielders excessive wage demands so he ended up staying at Madrid despite not penning a new contract.
The London duo are understood to have retained their interest after learning that Khedira is looking for a new challenge, however, it appears Chelsea have now stolen a march on the Gunners with the Metro claiming they have tabled a formal offer for the 27-year-old ahead of a potential switch this January.
The newspaper maintains that Arsenal will battle their Premier League rivals all the way for the players signature but Chelsea are believed to be confident of winning the race and luring Khedira to England this winter.
The Metro’s article stems from reports in Spain which claim that while Madrid are still hoping Khedira will sign a new deal, they will be happy to sell the player in January for around €20m if no extension is agreed to avoid losing him for nothing next summer.
It’s not known what Chelsea’s offer is or how close it comes to Madrid’s valuation, but it would be a major coup if Jose Mourinho could pull this off and land Khedira in January. The Blues already have a formidable-looking side and currently top the Premier League table, so their squad would be enhanced further if the German international was added to their ranks.
However, I wouldn’t discount Arsenal just yet. Arsene Wenger has admitted he’d like to add a dominant midfield presence to his team and Khedira would fit the bill nicely, so I wouldn’t be surprised if the Gunners stepped up their interest after learning Chelsea have made their move.
