By on December 2, 2014

Manchester United closed the gap at the top of the table with a hard fought 2-1 win over Stoke City at Old Trafford on Tuesday night.

Marouane Fellaini opened the scoring in the 21st minute with a header following a cross from Ander Herrera but Stoke levelled things up just before half time when Steven N’Zonzi fired home a superb effort from the edge of the area.

However, United won it just on the hour mark when Juan Mata’s free kick from out on the right wing evaded everyone and crept into the far corner of Asmir Begovic’s net for 2-1.

The visitors pushed for an equaliser and David De Gea was called into action in the last minute with the Spaniard making a sensational stop to deny Mark Hughes men a late leveller.

The win sees United close the gap on Southampton to just a single point with Manchester City a further point ahead in second-place.
