[Video Goals] Liverpool 1-1 Basel: Gerrard Stunner Not Enough As Reds Crash Out

By on December 9, 2014

Liverpool crashed out of the Champions League after being held to a 1-1 draw by Basel at Anfield on Tuesday night.

The Swiss champions started brightly and took a deserved lead midway through the first half when Fabian Frei fired low past Simon Mignolet from the edge of the area.

The Reds hopes of getting back into the game were dashed early in the second half when sub Lazar Markovic was controversially sent off for brushing the face of Safari as he tried to hold on to the ball.

However, Liverpool drew level with 10 minutes remaining when Steven Gerrard curled home a trademark free-kick for 1-1. The Merseysiders pushed for a late winner which would have sent them through to the knockout stages, but Basel held on to book their place in the last 16 and sent Liverpool into the Europa League.
