[Video Goals] Man Utd 3-0 Liverpool: Rooney On Target As United Sink Reds

Manchester United beat Liverpool 3-0 at Old Trafford this afternoon to pull clear in third spot in the Premier League table.

The visitors wasted a golden chance to take the lead when Raheem Sterling saw his shot saved by David De Gea and they were made to pay for that miss as United went straight up the other end to open the scoring when Wayne Rooney swept home Antonio Valencia’s cross.

United made it 2-0 in controversial circumstances just before half time as Juan Mata headed home from close range, with replays showing the Spaniard was offside following a slight touch from van Persie.

Liverpool missed some chances to get back in the game with De Gea pulling off some excellent saves, and United sealed the three points when Mata unselfishly teed-up van Persie to slot home in the 71st minute.

The win sees United pull three points clear of West Ham in third place in the table with Manchester City now just five points ahead in second.
