Manchester United kept pace with the top two after easing to a 3-1 win over Newcastle United at Old Trafford this afternoon.
United opened the scoring in the 23rd minute when Rooney was on hand to tap home from close range following a clever cut-back from Radamel Falcao.
The England striker then doubled United’s lead with a smart finish after being found by a superb pass from Juan Mata before Robin van Persie sealed the three points with a header just after half-time from an excellent Rooney through-ball.
Newcastle grabbed a late consolation through a Papiss Cisse penalty after Phil Jones had fouled Colback in the area but United held on to secure the win and move to within seven points of second placed Man City.
