Chelsea are confident they can fend off interest from Liverpool and agree a €25m deal for an Argentinean striker next summer. Find out who the player is here
With the January transfer now open for business, managers are working hard to strengthen their squads ahead of the second half of the season, so we’ll bring you all the latest news and gossip. Today, Chelsea are confident of beating Liverpool to Mauro Icardi….
Chelsea are confident they can fend off interest from Liverpool and nab Inter Milan forward Mauro Icardi for €25m as Jose Mourinho looks to bring in a replacement for Didier Drogba next summer, according to reports.
Blues legend Drogba returned to the club in July on a one-year deal and is expected to retire at the end of the current campaign leaving Mourinho with a void to fill up front.
Several strikers have been linked with a move to Stamford Bridge in recent months, including Barcelona super star Lionel Messi, but the Express claim the West Londoners have set their sights on Inter Milan striker Icardi.
The 21-year-old has been in impressive form since moving to the San Siro from Sampdoria in the summer of 2013, and he scored his 13th goal of the season with the equaliser during a 1-1 draw at champions Juventus on Tuesday night.
His potential has alerted several clubs throughout Europe with reports suggesting that Chelsea and Liverpool are showing a keen interest in offering him a fresh start in the Premier League.
The Express state that Inter are demanding €38m (£30m) for the Argentinean international but Chelsea are supposedly confident of not only beating Liverpool to his signature in the summer, but they think they’ll be able to bring the fee down to around €25m (£20m).
That would represent something of a coup if they were successful, however, they may have some trouble persuading Icardi to make the move as he’s recently claimed he’s content with life at Milan.
“I am happy in Milan, as I adapted well to the city and to Inter. Without doubt having so many Argentines in the squad helped, although there are fewer of them around this year.
“I chose Inter because they are a top club and am truly happy with my decision. They did everything to get me here.
“Sampdoria was my launch pad into the football that matters. I still have many friends there and know they consider me a good person.” Icardi is quoted as saying by the Express
Icardi is a real prospect and would be an excellent signing if Chelsea were able to pull it off next summer, but there’s still a long, long way to go before a deal is agreed and a lot of things can happen between now and the end of the season.
