Manchester United are ‘confident’ they’ll be able to fend off interest from Arsenal and secure a stunning €60m deal for Borussia Dortmund defender Mats Hummels this month, according to reports.
Hummel’s future at the Westfalenstadion has been thrown into doubt in recent months after Dortmund’s terrible start to the season that sees them currently sit in the bottom three of the Bundesliga table at the mid-way point of the campaign.
Understandably he’s attracting interest and Arsenal and Manchester United have been strongly linked with a move for the German international in recent weeks with both Arsene Wenger and Louis van Gaal making him a top target as they look to strengthen their defences this winter.
The duo were boosted in their pursuits when Hummels blasted his team as ‘pathetic’ in a recent interview following their disastrous season so far, and now it appears Man Utd believe this is there best chance to try and lure him away from his homeland.
The Daily Star claim that the 20-time Premier League champions are working hard behind the scenes on a deal for Hummels and are ‘confident’ they’ll be able to persuade Dortmund to cash-in this month.
The German giants have publicly insisted their skipper won’t be sold at any price, but the newspaper suggests that United are in prime position to wrap-up a deal worth a staggering €60m (£47m).
That is obscene amounts of money for a centre-back and would smash the British record of £31.9m that Manchester City paid Porto for Eliaquim Mangala last summer – although it’s still just short of the £50m PSG paid Chelsea for David Luiz.
We’ll have to wait and see if United’s apparent confidence is well-placed but I would still be surprised if Dortmund agreed to sell their skipper when they are in such a mess domestically and are still in the Champions League.
However, money talks in football and €60m would certainly be difficult to turn down, and Hummels would be an excellent addition for van Gaal if they were able to somehow pull it off.
