Manchester United are ready to hijack Arsenal’s attempts to sign Morgan Schneiderlin with Louis van Gaal lining-up a £25m bid for the Southampton midfielder

With the January transfer now open for business, managers are working hard to strengthen their squads ahead of the second half of the season, so we’ll bring you all the latest news and gossip. Today, Manchester United are ready to battle Arsenal for Morgan Schneiderlin…

Manchester United are ready to try and beat Arsenal to the signing of £25m-rated Southampton midfielder Morgan Schneiderlin this month, according to reports.

The French international has been in superb form for Southampton over the past 18 months and played a key role in helping the South Coast club secure a 1-0 win at Old Trafford on Sunday afternoon.

Arsenal have been strongly linked with a move for the 25-year-old in recent weeks with Arsene Wenger understood to be ready to renew his interest having failed to land Schneiderlin in the summer.

However, it appears the Gunners will now face stiff competition as the Express are reporting that Man Utd have made the Saints midfielder one of their top January targets as Louis van Gaal looks to bolster his squad ahead of the second half of the campaign.

The Dutchman was understood to be keen to land Kevin Strootman but with Roma refusing to do business, the newspaper suggests that United are now lining-up a £25m bid for Schneiderlin having been left hugely impressed by his performance at the weekend.

Ronald Koeman will be desperate to keep hold of his key man until at least the end of the season and Schneiderlin recently admitted that a move during the winter window would be ‘delicate’.

“That I don’t know. January is always a delicate month to leave in.

“I will finish my season with Southampton and then see what happens in the future.

“I don’t get worried about these things anymore.

“If this summer I have learned something, you can never think: I am gone, gone for good.” he told reporters

However, the Southampton money-men may find it extremely difficult to turn down an offer of £25m should the likes of United or Arsenal table that kind of money this month.

While the Saints are doing well in the league, the player will know he can earn a far greater salary and have more chance of challenging for top honours at one of the bigger clubs, so I’m sure he’d jump at the chance of moving if given the opportunity.

So I still think there could be a chance of Schneiderlin moving clubs this month if Wenger or van Gaal is prepared to dig deep enough, and they’d be getting one of the best all-round midfielders in the Premier League if they manage to get a deal agreed.

Player says he will not leave in January. Manager says he will not leave in January. Yet boring articles like this are still cut and pasted. When January finishes you will just change the dates from January to the summer. Yawn.

Halfway through the transfer window and no signings. If Wenger has identified his targets that he feels we need why are they not secured yet? Is it another case of last minute shopping and purchasing of left overs?
