The opening of the summer transfer window is almost upon us so we’ll bring you all the latest transfer rumours and gossip from around the globe. Today, Chelsea and Manchester United are linked with Raphael Varane and Alvaro Morata…
Chelsea and Manchester United are eyeing a double swoop on Real Madrid for £90m-rated duo Alvaro Morata and Raphael Varane this summer, according to the Daily Star.
Morata’s future has been the subject of much speculation in recent weeks after it became clear Madrid were exercising a £23m buyback option on the striker which was agreed when he joined Juventus two years ago.
The Spanish giants are now expected to sell the 23-year-old on at a profit and the Daily Star claim that Madrid are demanding around £50m with Chelsea and United the only clubs Morata is understood to be interested in joining this summer.
Jose Mourinho is gearing up for a busy couple of months after replacing Louis van Gaal as manager and the Portuguese coach could certainly do with another striker as United only managed to score 49 league goals last season, and the ‘Special One’ knows Morata having handed him his debut at Madrid.
However, incoming Blues boss Antonio Conte is also looking to strengthen his squad following a disastrous campaign for the West Londoners and he too knows Morata well after being the man who signed him for Juventus in 2014.
The Spanish international has the potential to become a world class striker, despite only scoring 12 goals in all competitions for Juve last season, but it remains to be seen whether either Chelsea or United will be prepared to meet Madrid’s reported £50m asking price.
Meanwhile, it could be a double swoop on the Champions League winners as the Daily Star are citing reports coming from Spanish outlet El Confidencial claiming that Raphael Varane wants to leave the Bernabeu this summer.
The French international fell out-of-favour under Zinedine Zidane last season with Pepe and Sergio Ramos selected as the first choice pairing for all the important La Liga and Champions League games during the second half of the season.
The Daily Star suggest that Madrid value Varane at around £40m and the Express claim that Chelsea are once again ready to go head-to-head with United over the 23-year-old’s signature.
Mourinho has already brought in Ivory Coast youngster Eric Bailly but is understood to want a more established name to play alongside Chris Smalling next season and he’s a known fan of Varane having signed him for Madrid from Lens back in 2011.
However, Chelsea are also on the look out for a top class centre-back as Conte prepares to switch to a new 3-5-2 system at Stamford Bridge next season and Varane is seemingly on the Italian tactician’s radar.
We’ll have to wait and see how things develop over the coming weeks but it looks like Chelsea and United are now going to battle it out over two of Europe’s hottest young talents and Varane and Morata would both be excellent additions for either club.

If they meet Madrid’s reported valuations for both players it’s going to set them back around £90m but that should be money well spent as the duo are both still young and their values are only going to increase the more they improve over the coming years.
