Manchester United be set to hijack Liverpool’s proposed move for a French midfielder after the Reds tabled an opening £18m offer. Find out the details here
The summer transfer window is now open for business so we’ll bring you all the latest transfer rumours and gossip from around the globe. Today, Man Utd and Liverpool are eyeing Moussa Sissoko….
Liverpool have stepped-up their interest in Moussa Sissoko after tabling an opening £18m offer but Newcastle United are demanding a whopping £35m for the French international, according to the Liverpool Echo.
Jurgen Klopp has already brought in four new signings this summer but the German coach is understood to be in the market for a midfielder with Joe Allen and Lucas Leiva tipped to leave Anfield over the coming weeks.
Sissoko has been linked with a move to Liverpool recently and it seems they’ve now formalised their interest as the Liverpool Echo are citing reports coming from Spanish outlet Mundo Deportivo that claim the Merseysiders have tabled an £18m bid.
However, the newspaper suggests that Newcastle chiefs are refusing to let the 26-year-old leave on the cheap and are holding out for a fee closer to £35m off the back of Sissoko’s impressive displays for France during the European Championships.
It’s highly unlikely Liverpool will be prepared to pay that kind of money for the midfielder but the Reds may want to try and get a deal agreed quickly as they could yet face stiff competition for Sissoko’s signature from north-west rivals Manchester United.
The Mirror are reporting that Jose Mourinho has identified Sissoko as a possible new recruit and the new United boss will turn his attention to the Frenchman if his proposed deal to sign Paul Pogba falls through.
Mourinho has already splashed out on three new signings this summer but he’s also understood to be in the market for a midfielder as he continues to revamp the squad left behind by former boss Louis van Gaal.
Pogba has been widely regarded as Mourinho’s number one target but the 23-year-old’s agent Mino Raiola suggested yesterday that the French international could yet snub a return to Old Trafford in favour of signing a new contract with Juventus [source: Sky Sports].
If that happens, then the Mirror are citing reports coming out of France that claim United will launch a swoop for Sissoko, which would spell bad news for Liverpool as the added competition will drive the player’s price up even further.
Sissoko is a versatile midfielder who can play through the middle or out on the wing ad obviously he has plenty of top flight experience having played for Newcastle in the Premier League for three years, so I think he’d be an excellent signing for either Liverpool or indeed United.

However, despite enjoying a superb Euro 2016 campaign, Sissoko isn’t worth £35m so I think Newcastle will have to lower their expectations before a deal with either club will be agreed.
