Player Keen On Move As Arsenal Open Talks Over Deal For £40m-Rated Uruguayan Star

Arsenal have opened negotiations with over a potential deal to sign £40m-rated international centre-back as Arsene Wenger continues his search for a defender

The summer transfer window is in full swing so we’ll bring you all the latest transfer rumours and gossip from around the globe. Today, Arsenal open talks of Jose Gimenez…..

Arsenal have opened negotiations with Atletico Madrid over a potential deal to sign £40m-rated centre-back Jose Gimenez as Arsene Wenger continues his search for a new defender, according to the Daily Mail.

With Per Mertesacker already on the sidelines for five months, Wenger is desperately trying to bring in another centre-back after Gabriel was ruled out for up to eight weeks with an ankle injury.

Laurent Koscielny also missed our Premier League opener on Sunday with the inexperienced Calum Chambers and Rob Holding exposed during our disappointing 4-3 defeat to Liverpool.

We’ve been strongly linked with a move for Shkodran Mustafi in recent weeks but are struggling to agree a deal with Valencia as they rate the German international at around £30m, so it looks as though Wenger is eyeing alternatives.

And according to the Daily Mail, Arsenal have now opened talks with Ateltico Madrid over a potential deal to sign Jose Gimenez with the 21-year-old understood to be open to the idea of moving to north London this summer.

Gimenez has emerged as one of the most highly-rated defenders in Spanish football since breaking in to Diego Simone’s first team last season and has already racked up over 20 caps for the Uruguayan international team so he’d be a sensational signing if we could pull it off.

However, a deal is still a long way from completion as the newspaper claims that Atletico are demanding £40m for Gimenez and Arsenal have so far baulked at the La Liga giants valuation.

Shkodran Mustafi: also on Arsenal’s radar

We’ll have to wait and see how negotiations develop over the coming days but unless Atletico or Valencia lower their asking prices, it looks like we could miss out on signing Gimenez and Mustafi this summer.

It appears highly unlikely we’ll get anybody in before Saturday’s trip to Leicester, so Wenger is going to have to throw Koscielny back in to action against the champions after just two weeks pre-season training.
