10. Mark Hughes v Sheffield Wednesday, 16th March 1994
A powerful goal, struck with precision on the half-volley from more than 30 yards away, cannoned into the net after hitting the underside of the crossbar. It was voted Man Utd’s best home goal in the Premier League, leaving Sheffield Wednesday goalkeeper Kevin Pressman completely beaten.
9. Andrew Cole vs Leicester City, 6th November 1999
When Ole Gunnar Solskjaer headed a long ball into the air, little appeared to be on the cards. But Andy Cole quickly leapt up and fired a superb scissor kick into the Stretford End goal, giving Tim Flowers no chance of stopping it. The skill, speed of thought and dexterity required to execute the goal earned Cole a place in the history books of United greats.
8. Wayne Rooney vs Bolton Wanderers, 17th March 2007
In one of the all-time great counter-attacks, Cristiano Ronaldo began by chesting down a loose ball inside Man Utd’s area. From that moment, it took Ronaldo and Rooney 13 seconds – and 10 touches – to fire the ball deep into Jussi Jaaskelainen’s goal.
7. Anthony Martial vs Stoke City, 2nd February 2016
Rooney, Michael Carrick, Juan Mata, Jesse Lingard and Matteo Darmian all played their part in a goal that began deep inside the Reds’ half, but it was Martial who finished it off in deadly fashion, whipping it unstoppably into Jack Butland’s far corner. It was Martial’s ninth goal of the season for Manchester United.
6. Cristiano Ronaldo vs Portsmouth, 30th January 2008
The maestro, Cristiano Ronaldo, scored an amazing goal that Sir Alex Ferguson later called the “best free kick” he’d ever seen in the history of the Premier League. The kick was skilful, ferocious and accurate, the awesome power generated when Ronaldo had only a small area in which to work confirming his skills as mind-boggling.
5. Wayne Rooney vs Newcastle United, 24th April 2005
Nineteen-year-old Rooney was arguing with the ref one minute, but he soon turned his anger into an unstoppable, swerving, dipping volley that was just too powerful for Shay Given to stop.
4. Eric Cantona vs Sunderland, 21st December 1996
This was the signature goal of one of Man Utd’s greatest ever showmen. Eric Cantona’s measured chip in, off the top of the post, is one of his most iconic goals that is still talked about today. He lulled the defence into a false sense of security before an unexpected burst of pace saw him outwit goalkeeper Lionel Perez. It was followed by an almost slow-motion turn to all four stands to confirm he was the king.
3. Robin van Persie vs Aston Villa, 22nd April 2013
Scored on the night Man Utd clinched their 20th league title, Robin van Persie’s remarkable volley was voted the top goal by 6.6% of fans. His remorseless dispatch of the ball into the back of the net – assisted by a pass from Rooney – was almost unbelievable. The goal’s beauty was its apparent simplicity and the precision of its execution.
2. Dimitar Berbatov vs Blackburn Rovers, 27th November 2010
The second best goal, voted for by 30.5% of fans, was Dimitar Berbatov’s strike against Blackburn Rovers. From deep inside United’s own half, he calmly negotiated his way through traffic, assisted by Patrice Evra, spreading a precise pass wide to Nani. Berbatov then slotted the subsequent return high into the Stretford End goal.
