The January transfer window is now closed but we can still look at deals that failed to get across the line and those being lined-up for the summer. Today, Man Utd are linked with Nelson Semedo…
Manchester United have agreed a £35m deal to sign Benfica defender Nelson Semedo at the end of the season, according to a report in the Daily Star.
Jose Mourinho decided against making any significant new additions to his squad during the January transfer window but it seems the United boss is gearing up for a busy summer of activity at Old Trafford.
And they may already have their first signing in the bag as the Daily Star are citing a report from Portuguese outlet Noticias ao Minuto that claims United have already got an agreement in place with Benfica to sign Semedo.
The 23-year-old has developed in to one of the best full-backs in Portuguese football since breaking in to the Benfica first team last season and he’s now established himself as the clubs first choice right-back with 29 appearances to his name this campaign.
His impressive form saw him earn his first cap for the Portugal senior squad in 2015 having previously played for the Under-23’s and it looks like his potential has caught the attention of Mourinho.
The report indicates that United will pay Benfica £35m for the highly-rated defender with Semedo ear-marked as the long-term replacement for Antonio Valencia at Old Trafford.
The Ecuadorian international has enjoyed an excellent season with United and Mourinho recently claimed that Valencia was the best right-back in the Premier League before handing him a new contract just last week.
However, Valencia will turn 32 at the start of next season so United need to look to the future and it appears Mourinho has now lined-up a deal to land Semedo at the end of the season.

If he does end up completing a switch to Manchester this summer, the Portuguese youngster will probably come in as back-up for Valencia and spent next season learning from the experienced Ecuadorian before looking to take over the first team shirt in 2018/19.
