Manchester United are closing in on a £50m deal to sign Monaco’s versatile midfielder Fabinho after making headway in negotiations this week, according to a report in The Sun.
Jose Mourinho is expected to be extremely active in the summer transfer window as he tries to build a squad capable of competing in the Premier League and Champions League next season.
A new holding midfielder to act as a long-term replacement for Michael Carrick – who turns 36 next month – is desperately needed and it appears Mourinho has now set his sights on Fabinho.
The Brazilian international has just come off the back of an excellent season that saw him reinvent himself in a new central midfield position to play a key role in helping Monaco secure their first Ligue 1 title since 2000.
The 23-year-old had previously made his name as an attacking right-back after joining Monaco in 2013 so his versatility will be of huge appeal to Mourinho.
It looks like United are now closing-in on a deal as The Sun are citing a report from Spanish outlet Marca that claims negotiations with Monaco have advanced over the past few days.
The newspaper says the player is keen to come to England and a deal that will see United pay the French champions £50m for Fabinho’s signature is now believed to be close.
Monaco have already wrapped-up a deal to sign Anderlect midfielder Youri Tielemens so he could be viewed as a potential replacement for Fabinho now that he’s reportedly on the verge of joining United.

We’ll have to wait and see how things develop over the coming days but I think Fabinho would be an excellent signing if United could pull it off as he’s developed in to a top class holding midfielder and is also capable of playing at full-back so he’ll give Mourinho plenty of options.
