Managers are now pressing ahead with their plans for the final days of the summer transfer window so we’ll bring you all the latest news and gossip from around the globe. Today, Arsenal are linked with Marco Asensio…
Arsenal are being linked with a late swoop for Marco Asensio and the £72m attacker could push for the move if Real Madrid don’t guarantee him regular football this season, according to a report in the Mirror.
Asensio joined Madrid from Mallorca for just £3m in 2014 and he’s developed in to one of the most highly-rated young attackers in European football over the past three years.
However, the 21-year-old has struggled to nail down a regular starting spot in Zinedine Zidane’s starting eleven with the likes of Isco, Gareth Bale and Cristiano Ronaldo all ahead of him in the pecking order.
The youngster has started this season brightly after scoring two stunning goals against Barcelona recently but he’s still not guaranteed a place in Zidane’s side which has led to speculation he could look for a move.
Arsenal have been linked with Asensio throughout the summer but most supporters didn’t pay too much attention to the speculation given his status as one of the best young players on the planet.
The Mirror are citing a report from Diario Gol that once again claims that Arsenal are eyeing a late swoop for Asensio and could trigger his £72m release clause before the window shuts next Thursday night.
However, this report suggests that the young attacker could actually push for a move to North London if Madrid don’t give him the assurances he wants over regular football this season.
Asensio is understandably concerned that he might miss out on a place in the Spain squad for the World Cup finals next summer if he isn’t playing regularly so Madrid are under pressure to give him answers.
Obviously Asensio would be a sensational signing if we could somehow lure him to the Emirates as he has the potential to become a true super-star and he’d be a long-term replacement for the likes of Alexis Sanchez and Mesut Ozil.

However, before we all get too excited, I would take this latest report with a huge pinch of salt as a deal is still highly unlikely to happen. It’s not often a top talent leaves the Bernabeu against Madrid’s wishes and I wouldn’t be surprised if Asensio’s agent is using Arsenal’s interest to secure his client a better contract and more playing time.
