Eden Hazard scored twice as Chelsea closed in on the top two after coming from behind to secure a 3-1 victory over Newcastle at Stamford Bridge this afternoon.
The visitors started brightly and opened the scoring in the 12th minute as Dwight Gayle pounced on a rebound after Thibaut Courtois had come out to smother the ball and the striker stroked home in to an empty net for 0-1.
Chelsea didn’t take long to level things up as Eden Hazard fired home from inside the area in the 21st minute after Newcastle had failed to clear a cross properly.
The Blues then took the lead before half time as Victor Moses found Alvaro Morata with a fierce cross and the striker headed home from close range to give Chelsea a 2-1 lead at the break.
Newcastle pushed for an equaliser in the second half but Chelsea were given the perfect opportunity to put the game beyond doubt when Moses was fouled by Ritchie in the area. Hazard stepped up to make it 3-1 with a nonchalant chipped penalty in the 74th minute.
The win sees Chelsea move level on points with second-placed Manchester United and puts the pressure on the Reds ahead of their trip to Arsenal this evening.
