Manchester United take on Southampton at Old Trafford on Saturday afternoon. Here is a preview with the latest team news, line-ups and prediction
Manchester United will look to get back to winning ways when they take on Southampton at Old Trafford on Saturday afternoon.
The Red Devils endured a tough festive period as they were held to a 2-2 draw by Leicester City before having to come from behind to salvage a point at home to Burnley on Boxing Day.
Those draws have left United trailing run-away Premier League leaders Manchester City by a whopping 15 points with 18 games remaining so it looks like Jose Mourinho’s side have blow any slim hope of catching their rivals.
United also have to start looking over their shoulder as Chelsea are just one point behind in third while sixth-placed Arsenal are a further five adrift so the battle for the top four is going to be tight.
Mourinho will therefore be desperate to secure a much-needed win and he should be confident against a Southampton side who’ve lost four of their last seven league games and were thrashed 5-2 by Tottenham last time out.
Team news
Mourinho has raised concerns over the fitness of Romelu Lukaku as the striker has played every minute of league football this season but the Belgian international is still expected to start tomorrow.
Anthony Martial is back in full training after missing the Burnley game with a knock while Matteo Darmian is pushing for a recall after also missing the game at Old Trafford on Tuesday.
However, Chris Smalling is expected to miss out once again with a groin strain while Antonio Valencia is nursing a hamstring problem so they join Marouane Fellaini, Eric Bailly and Michael Carrick on the sidelines.
Southampton will be without Virgil van Dijk as the defender will join Liverpool on January 1st while Charlie Austin will serve the second of his three-match suspension.
Ryan Bertrand is also still missing with a hamstring injury and Cedric Soares is out with an ankle problem.
Expected line-ups
Predicted Score
Man Utd 2-0 Southampton: The Saints were woeful at Spurs last time out so they should be good opposition for United tomorrow. Mourinho knows the title is all-but over but they have to keep pushing in-case City implode and they can’t afford any more slip-ups. I’m going for a routine home win.

United are the 4/11 favourites to win this game with the bookmakers but we can get new customers enhanced odds of 25/1 on United – just click here to take advantage of these incredible odds [winning paid in free bets, max stake £1, T&C’s apply].
However, I think it will be a draw so here are some other bets I like the look of:
- Both teams to score NO at: 4/5 – a £10 bet would return £18
- Exact score of 2-0 United win at: 5/1 – a £10 bet would return £60
- Lukaku to score first in a 2-0 United win at: 11/1 – a £10 bet would return £120
