Man Utd & Tottenham In Battle To Sign La Liga Midfielder
Manchester United are ready to battle-it-out with Tottenham over the signing of Real Madrid’s want-away midfielder Mateo Kovacic, according to reports
The January transfer window in now closed so it’s time to look at those deals that didn’t get over the line and those being lined-up for the summer. Today, Man Utd and Tottenham are linked with Mateo Kovacic…
Manchester United are ready to battle-it-out with Tottenham over the signing of Real Madrid’s want-away midfielder Mateo Kovacic, according to reports in Spain via The Sun.
Kovacic joined Madrid from Inter Milan in 2015 but has struggled to hold down a regular first team place at the Bernabeu with the midfielder starting just one La Liga game so far this season.
The 23-year-old’s chances of breaking in to Zinedine Zidane’s plans look slim as the likes of Casemiro, Toni Kroos, Luka Modric, Isco, Marco Asensio and Dani Ceballos are all ahead of him in the pecking order.
Speculation last month suggested that Kovacic was looking to leave in January in search of regular first team football ahead of the 2018 World Cup finals but a move failed to materialise.
However, The Sun claims Kovacic is still looking to leave Madrid this summer and it seems he’ll be offered a fresh start here in the Premier League as the report says United and Spurs are both keen.
The newspaper cites Spanish outlet AS as saying that the English duo are ready to battle-it-out over the Croatian international’s signature but could face further competition from Juventus.
Jose Mourinho is set to dip in to the transfer market for at least one new midfielder as Michael Carrick will retire in June while Marouane Fellaini is also coming to the end of his contract.
It seems the United boss is eyeing a move for Kovacic but Spurs are also in the running and Mauricio Pochettino’s side could be an attractive proposition if they qualify for the Champions League again.

We’ll have to wait and see how things develop over the coming months but I think Kovacic would be an excellent signing for United or Spurs as he has the potential to be a top midfielder if given a regular run of games.
