Arsenal are set to confirm the signing of Bernd Leno in a £22m deal from Bayer Leverkusen on Tuesday as Unai Emery closes-in on a double swoop also involving Sokratis Papastathopoulos, according to reports in Germany via the Metro.
Our new head coach has already completed the signing of Stephan Lichtsteiner on a free transfer from Juventus but he’s expected to make several further additions as he looks to revamp the squad left behind by Arsene Wenger this summer.
A new number one is a priority as Petr Cech is now 36 and his form declined last season while David Ospina is expected to leave the Emirates after failing to hold down a regular first team place. Leno has been strongly linked with a move to north London in recent weeks with widespread speculation suggesting we’ve been in talks over a deal.
Italian outlet CalcioMercato reported last week that Arsenal had agreed a fee in the region of £22m with Leverkusen and personal terms had also been agreed with Leno over his move to the Emirates.
It looks like a transfer is now on the verge of completion as the Metro are citing a report from SportBild that claims Arsenal will formally unveil Leno as our latest new signing at some point on Tuesday.
The German international has been one of the most consistent goalkeepers in the Bundesliga in recent years and kept 10 clean sheets in 33 games last season so I think he’ll be an excellent addition to the squad.
The 26-year-old won’t be the only new arrival as the Metro claim Arsenal are also on the verge of completing a deal to sign Sokratis from Borussia Dortmund for a fee in the region of £16m.
The 30-year-old centre-back has been tipped for a move to Arsenal for several weeks after refusing to sign a new contract at the Westfalonstadion and with just one year left on his deal, Dortmund have decided to cash-in.
