Abramovich Agrees To Pay £89m Release Clause As Chelsea Close-In On 3rd Signing
Roman Abramovich has agreed to pay Jan Oblak’s £89m release clause as Chelsea close-in on a replacement for Real Madrid-bound Thibaut Courtois
The summer transfer window is drawing to a close and managers are working hard to secure last minute deals so we’ll bring you all the latest gossip from around the globe. Today, Chelsea are linked with Jan Oblak….
Roman Abramovich has agreed to pay Jan Oblak’s £89m release clause as Chelsea close-in on a replacement for Real Madrid-bound Thibaut Courtois, according to Spanish outlet Mundo Deportivo.
Chelsea have been scouring the transfer market in search of a new number one goalkeeper after Courtois made it clear he wants to return to Spain and has refused to sign a new contract – with his current deal set to expire next summer.
The Belgian international has failed to report for pre-season training so it seems inevitable that Chelsea will sell the 26-year-old to Madrid over the coming days and Jordan Pickford has been strongly linked as Maurizio Sarri looks to find a suitable replacement.
However, Mundo Deportivo claims that with Everton demanding around £58m for the England World Cup star, Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich has decided to push the boat out further to meet Oblak’s £89m release clause and land one of the best goalkeepers in the world.
The Spanish publication says Chelsea will go to Atletico Madrid and trigger the release clause within the next 24 hours as they look to push through this sensational deal before the transfer window closes on Thursday evening.
Atletico have done their best to try and convince Oblak to sign a new contract that would see his exit fee increase substantially but the Slovenian international has so far failed to agree terms so Chelsea are ready to take advantage.
The La Liga giants always feared Oblak could end up joining Chelsea this summer and they signed Adan from Real Betis is preparation for his exit but his loss will come as a huge blow to Diego Simeone.
