Olivier Giroud scored a stunning free-kick to save Chelsea’s blushes and salvage a 2-2 draw with Vidi in their final Europa League group game this evening.
With qualification to the knockout stages as group winners already secured, Maurizio Sarri made several changes to his starting eleven with his key men rested ahead of their trip to Brighton on Sunday.
It was a low key start but the the visitors opened the scoring midway through the first half as Willian fired home a superb free-kick to make it 0-1 in the 30th minute.
Vidi got themselves back in the game when Chelsea youngster Ethan Ampadu got his positioning all wrong and headed in to his own net from a corner to make it 1-1 just two minutes later.
A shock looked to be on the cards when Vidi took the lead shortly after half time as Nego rifled home a superb volley for 2-1 following a flowing move in the 56th minute.
However, the Blues managed to avoid an embarrassing defeat thanks to Giroud as the French international curled home a wonderful free-kick in the 75th to make it 2-2.
Neither side could find a late winner to the spoils were shared meaning Chelsea finish the group stages with 16 points having gone undefeated over their six matches.
