Manchester United have opened initial talks with Barcelona to discuss a potential deal to sign Samuel Umtiti this summer as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer continues to overhaul his squad, according to reports in Spain via the Daily Mail.
United chiefs have been working hard trying to secure their summer targets ahead of the new season and they’ve already splashed out on winger Daniel James while right-back Aaron Wan-Bissaka is on the verge of joining from Crystal Palace.
Solskjaer is still looking to further strengthen his defence with a top class centre-back but he’s been forced to look at alternative targets after being priced out of moves for the likes of Harry Maguire and Kalidou Koulibaly.
It seems his search has taken him to Spain as the Daily Mail are citing a report from El Mundo Deportivo that claims Man Utd have made contact with Barcelona to discuss a potential deal to sign Samuel Umtiti.
The 25-year-old has struggled with knee injuries since joining Barca from Lyon in 2016 and he’s behind Gerard Pique and Clement Lenglet in Ernesto Valverde’s pecking order. Umtiti could find regular football even harder to find if Barcelona are successful in signing Ajax starlet Matthijs de Ligt.
L’Equipe claimed last month that the Catalans would be willing to cash-in on Umtiti if £53m [€60m] is put on the table this summer and that kind of deal may be tempting for United considering the figures they’ve been quoted for other centre-back targets.
Man Utd need to improve at the back after conceding 54 Premier League goals last season – the most they’ve conceded in 40 years – and I think Umtiti would be an excellent signing if they could lure him to Old Trafford.

However, any potential deal is probably dependent on Barcelona signing a replacement and they’re reportedly losing out to Juventus in the race for De Ligt so that could be a blow to United’s hopes of landing Umtiti unless the Spaniard’s land an alternative target.
